5 Awesome Reasons To Visit Caprock Canyons State Park
1. See Bison
The Texas State Bison Herd lives here. There were at least 15 bison greeting us at the entrance to the park when we first got there. We loved watching them. They do roam other areas of the park as well. Expect bison traffic jams on the road.
These animals are the largest land animal in North America! It may not look like it, but they can run fast and jump high. They weigh about 2000 pounds! Keep a distance of at least 50 yards, because you don’t want that charging at you.
2. Canyon Views
One of the best views of the canyon is behind the amphitheater. Make sure to stop and check it out!
3. See the Prairie Dogs
I don’t know what it is about these little creatures but they intrigue me. I spend more time than I should watching them! They are located by the bathroom and playground area. You can also hear them squeak at each other. Pop Goes The Weasel anyone???
4. More Views
South Prong Trailhead is the furthest point in the park, so a great place to take a break. The trailhead has a bench with a beautiful view!
5. Hiking
This park has over 25 miles of trails. We only had the chance to do part of the Canyon Rim trail and it had incredible views. I will definitely come back to explore more of the trails. Here is a link to the state park trail map.
Recommended Hikes from friends:
- Eagle Point Trail – 4 miles round trip MODERATE
- Canyon Rim Trail – 6 miles round trip MODERATE
- Haynes Ridge Overlook Trail – 2.3 miles one way VERY CHALLENGING
