Looking for free things to do in Key West Florida? I’ve got you covered!
Key West is a beautiful destination to visit, but can get expensive. Luckily there are some must do’s that happen to be free!
1. White Street Pier
One of the best ways to start your day at Key West is to watch the sunrise at White Street Pier. It’s also a popular fishing spot.
White Street Pier is located by Higgs Beach on the south side of the island.
2. Hit the Beach
Going to the beach is one of my favorite free things to do in Key West. There are several beaches that are free to enter.
Higgs Beach is a great place to spend the afternoon. They have a playground for kids and bathroom facilities, plus places to rent snorkeling equipment and kayaks. Known for stingray sightings.
Smathers Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Key West. They have drink and food stands, plus places to rent kayaks and snorkeling equipment.
South Beach is the beach to head if you want to drink while laying out. You can rent a beach chair and there’s a bar on the beach. It also has a cute photo opp with a huge chair.
Dog Beach is you may have guessed, the beach to take your four legged friends. Your fur baby is free to run around unleashed here.
Just FYI, Key West beaches are NOT going to be what you picture when you think of a Florida beach. The Florida Keys are known for their corral and snorkeling opportunities. That being said, it’s still a beach and we enjoyed them.
3. Southernmost Point
Have you even been to Key West if you don’t have this iconic photo?
This is located of course, in the southernmost part of the island. My advice is to get there early, like before 9am if you want to get a picture without having to wait in line. Otherwise just be mentally prepared that there will be a line during the day.
4. US 1 Mile Marker
Key West is where US 1 starts at mile marker 0. This makes for another cute iconic Key West photo opportunity.
Unlike the Southernmost Point, there is usually not a line here.
5. Duval Street
Duval Street is the main hub of Key West where all the action happens! It’s my absolute favorite free thing to do in Key West!
Stroll down the street and take in the Key West architecture. There are cute and funky boutiques, fantastic restaurants and adorable bed & breakfasts. One of my favorite shops to browse is The Funky Chicken Store.
Another big thing to do is bar hop Duval Street. Obviously drinking is not free, but it’s fun to wander around.
6. Take a Rum Distillery Tour
The First Legal Key West Distillery tour is another one of my favorite free things to do in Key West.
First Legal Distillery offers free tours through their warehouse and shows you how to make the perfect rum. We learned a ton on this tour and highly recommend it. Plus the free tastings at the end are pretty awesome!
Tours run every 20 minutes from noon to 5pm everyday.
7. Sunset at Mallory Square
Mallory Square holds a sunset celebration every evening and is a great spot to watch the sun go down.
We enjoyed watching the many street performers while waiting for the sun to set. They have food vendors and there are bars close by to grab a drink while you’re waiting.
Get there early if you want a front row spot to watch the sunset.
It’s free to enter and watch all the festivities. Parking will cost you, so if possible walk from your hotel.
