Patrick & I were recently in Key West for a couple days with no kids. Of course I had to find something nice to celebrate the occasion, and the Southernmost House Hotel was it! This is an adorable historic bed & breakfast. Our experience at the Southernmost House Hotel in Key West was wonderful!

Southernmost House Hotel

Southernmost House Location:

The Southernmost House Hotel is of course near the southernmost point of the US. The location is fantastic! It’s right by the ocean, within walking distance to many restaurants and at the end of Duval Street.

Duval Street is the main hub of Key West. Most of the party action happens at the other end of Duval, so it’s nice that you’re close but not too close!

South beach is located near by with in a minute or two walk. Not to get confused with South Beach Miami, but a tiny beach in Key West.

It was nice having the ocean right there as a backdrop to our whole stay.

Southernmost House Property:

As we were driving up, my husband was even awed by the charm of this place. It’s absolutely adorable!

The 18 room Queen Anne-style mansion just oozes character and unique historical artifacts. The house was built in 1896 for $250,000 and it was originally the private residence of Judge Harris.

Fun fact: Thomas Edison oversaw the installation of the electric lighting!

Hotel Lobby

This house has had several celebrities, gangsters, and even five presidents stay here. They include Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John Kennedy, Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter.

The Southernmost House Hotel offers a heated pool with oceanfront lounging. We came in April, so the days were perfect but the nights got a little chilly. The pool was the perfect temp, so perfect we didn’t want to get out!

We enjoyed drinking coffee and nibbling on our breakfast on the veranda in the morning. Seriously such a beautiful perfect setting looking out at the ocean!

Speaking of breakfast, there is a complimentary one served in the main house every morning. There’s not much to say about it except that it is free. We had croissants, bagels and some fruit. Not sure if this is what is being offered because of Covid, or if it’s always been this type of breakfast. I would skip this, because there are many other incredible breakfast options in the area.

There is a small restaurant onsite called the Seaside Cafe and they offer oceanfront dining, a bar area and room service. Highly recommend! We tried their lobster pizza and it was Ah May Zing!!! Even if you decide not to stay here, you should come eat this pizza!

A few other tidbits of information: There is onsite parking available for $20 per night, the property is also a wedding venue and they offer a concierge service.

Our Room at the Southernmost House Hotel:

The Southernmost House Hotel has rooms in the main house, plus separate bungalows on property. We stayed in a bungalow near the pool and it was fabulous! Room 103. We’re talking only a few steps out the door to the pool and the ocean!

We had our own little patio outside with a table and chairs to enjoy the beautiful weather. Plus we were very close to the main house if we needed anything.

The room itself was great. We had a comfortable king sized bed, Smart TV, and a small kitchenette.

The bathroom had everything we needed, including travel size Tommy Bahama toiletries.

Overall, I loved our room! It was super clean and somewhat spacious. The only complaint I have is that our door was hard to open and hard to shut. It still locked fine, so it was only a minor inconvenience.

What’s Nearby?

A couple close attractions within only a couple minutes walk:

The Southernmost Point just a few yards away. Quick tip, go early in the morning for pictures because a line will gather quickly.

The Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory is right across the street.

Overall Thoughts of The Southernmost House:

Would I stay here again? Absolutely! We only stayed one night and wish we would had stayed at least one more. The location is perfect! We stayed out late and felt secure walking back to the property and through the property.
