I’m a HUGE fan of creating family traditions with holidays or any big events through out the year. Even more so now that my oldest will be leaving in a little over a year for college. I’ve tweaked some of our favorite Easter traditions, so even teens will join in on the fun! Check out these ideas to add some Easter Fun with Teens:
Dying Eggs
One of the most common traditions. Hard boil eggs and use food coloring or store bought dye to make them different colors. There’s all kinds of kits out there for solid colors, tie die or even marbled looks. I realize not every teen will love this. My son would probably rather do homework, lol. However some will get into it. Turn it into a competition or contest. Most creative gets a prize.
Egg Hunt Extreme
The most popular tradition is the egg hunt. When my kids were little we would attend a couple different egg hunts. Our church, the neighborhood and some of my mom groups would host their own as well. Now that they are teens, there seem to be no community events geared to their age. We’ve had to come up with some ideas to make it fun as they get older. Teens will love egg hunts if you make it fun and/or have awesome prizes.
Here’s different ideas to mix it up:
- Regular egg hunt but in extremely hard to find places….like sometimes us adults forget where we hid them.
- Color coded egg hunt- Same as the above but each kid has to find their own color.
- Adult egg hunt- We’ve let the teens hide the eggs for us and then we go searching. Fun for both parties!!
- Nighttime egg hunt- We use flashlights, but the night time does make it a challenge finding the eggs.
- Glow in the dark egg hunt- same as above, but use glow in the dark eggs.
- Paintball! Rent out a course, throw some eggs around and then shoot each other!
We will still put candy in the eggs, but we’ve also added money and special reward coupons. Like no chores, stay up late, Starbucks run, movie date, etc. They love these prizes!!
“Egg” Neighbors
This is something fun to do with teens. Fill up 12 eggs with goodies and hide them in your neighbor’s or friend’s front yard. Place a sign on their door telling them they’ve been egged and find the eggs. You can request for people to refill the eggs and pass them on.
Plant Flowers or a Garden
Spring time is the perfect season to start a garden or plant flowers. Easter is about new life and growth and a garden is a great way to represent these. This may not be on the top of their list of fun things to do, but it is a great way to spend time together. Plus, you’re teaching gardening skills.
Attend Church Together
Take the family for an Easter church service. Some churches offer Good Friday services and Sunrise services.
Special Dinner
We have a big dinner with extended family over on Easter. Have them help with planning the meal, decorating the table or preparing the food. Or let them make the dessert! Sometimes after dinner, we will do short Minute To Win It activities with an Easter theme. They can help prepare for this or just join in the fun.
Other Ideas for Easter Fun With Teens:
These are things we do sometimes, but not every year.
- Watch Easter Movies- Veggie Tales when they were younger. The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe and other Easter movies now. Eventually we may watch The Passion of the Christ, but it is rated R.
- Resurrection Rolls- these are fun to show an edible version of the empty tomb on Easter.
- Easter Family Pictures- I’ll be honest here, my kids hate family picture time! But it’s such a great time to take one!!
- Special Breakfast- Bunny pancakes or something equally cute and yummy
- Easter Baskets- Fill a basket with gifts and hide in the house for them to find.
- Make Easter treats and share them with friends and family
- Have our own sunrise service- watch the sunrise together, read the Bible and have breakfast outside.
- New Easter Outfits for church.
There are many ways to make Easter fun for teens. My kids favorites are the egg hunts. I think they have more fun with them now, than when they were little. Teens still need and want the freedom to have fun in silly ways.
Do you have teens? What Easter traditions do they still love?
