I think we can all agree that 2020 has been crazy! The thing I love most about Christmas is being able to spend time with family. Even though this year will be different, Christmas can still be amazing. I’ve put together 12 Virtual Christmas Party Ideas that will be a hit!

Christmas Tree Decorating

Plan a date and time for everyone to decorate their own Christmas tree. Give people enough time to purchase decorations or lights if needed. During the video chat everyone can decorate their own tree while chatting with each other. At the end, take turns showing off each other’s Christmas trees.

Ornament Making Party

Plan a date and time for your ornament making party. Make sure to get RSVP’s so you know how many supplies to purchase. Pick an ornament you would like to make, but be sure to consider others crafting abilities! Place everything that will be needed to make the ornament together. Mail out the package with plenty of time to arrive before the party. You can also provide a supply list instead. Meet up on video chat and make the ornament together. If ornaments are not your thing, this can be done with any craft project.

Gingerbread House Decorating Challenge

One of my favorite activities is decorating gingerbread houses! This can be done like the party above. Make sure everyone has a gingerbread house kit and virtually hang together while decorating. Another way is to have everyone make their own gingerbread house before the party and then decorate together. They will all be more unique. For the real competitive people, it can be a challenge with a prize. Best looking gingerbread house gets a gift card (or whatever).

For the younger kids, they can decorate gingerbread cookies and show each other virtually.

Caroling

What’s a party without music?!? There are a few different ways this can be done. If there are musicians in the group maybe they can perform a mini concert for the guests that can’t sing. Kids will love this no matter what. They’ll have a blast singing Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and other favorites! If it’s an adult only virtual party, maybe a few cocktails before doing a karaoke version?? Everyone can submit their favorite Christmas songs so nothing is missed.

Christmas Cookie Exchange

Okay, so I’ll be honest here. This will not be the same as a real event where you can leave with 20 different cookies. I’m ALL about Christmas cookies! But it can still be fun. With this party, you make the cookies ahead of time and type out the recipe. During the video chat, you show off your cookies and email out the recipes to each guest. By the end of the party, everyone has new cookie recipes to try. Another version of this is to have everyone participating mail a cookie to each other before the party. Then they enjoy the cookies during the video chat.

Secret Santa

My family loves doing this every year. Decide as a group the price limit and a date & time for the big reveal. The organizer will send everyone the name and address of the person they are buying for. Make sure to give everyone enough time to purchase and mail the gifts to the recipient.

During the big reveal, have everyone take turns opening their present on video chat. Challenge them to see if they can figure out who their Secret Santa is.

Holiday Home Tour

I absolutely love looking at other people’s holiday decorations. This is the perfect way to show off all your hard work and at the same time see everyone else’s decorations. During this video chat, each person can take a turn showing everyone around their home. Feel free to show as much or as little as you want.

Ugly Christmas Sweater Party

These have been all the rage the past few years, so of course it needs to be included in the virtual Christmas party list! This can be done in a couple different ways. One way is to decorate the sweaters during the video chat like a craft party. Another way is to already be wearing your Ugly Christmas Sweater. A prize can be rewarded for the most ugly “Ugly Christmas Sweater”.

A spin off of this is doing an Ugly Christmas Mask party! Same as the sweater, everyone can decorate during the video chat or show up with one already made.

Game Night

There are many Christmas games that can be played virtually with family and friends. Check out this post for virtual Christmas game ideas.

Holiday Happy Hour

Adult Christmas parties usually go hand in hand with alcohol. This party is all about enjoying happy hour together just virtually. There’s a couple ways to do this. Find Christmas cocktail recipes and share with each person attending. Everyone will get to indulge in the same drink. Another way is to have everyone make their favorite beverage during the video chat. Then we all learn new drinks to try next time.

Feel free to add fun games or a theme to this to make it even more fun!

Christmas Potluck

Food is an important part of any party or gathering, even your virtual Christmas party! Similar to the Cookie Exchange, everyone will make their own dish and share it on video chat. The organizer can set up a group email that includes all the recipes. This can have a theme like casserole dishes, 30 minute meals, crock pot meals, soups, etc. Then you walk away with a recipe you know you want!

Christmas Movie Night

This is one I’m really looking forward too! This can be accomplished a few different ways. Everyone watches the same movie at the same time. Then they get on video chat to discuss it after the movie finishes. It can also be watched on video chat together with everyone muted. Another way is using Teleparty to watch together. Teleparty adds a group chat to movies on Netflix, Disney, Hulu and HBO.

No movie night is complete without popcorn and hot cocoa.

Talent Show

A fun way to show off everyone’s talents! Give guests or family members enough time to prepare for the big event. Feel free to make this as fun and silly as possible.

Ideas: Paint, Photography, Create a TikTok video, stand Up Comedy, Yo-Yo tricks, Hula Hoop, Lip Sync, rapping Dr. Seuss, etc.
